“Venue Recycling in the USA,” is the culmination of a venue and event recycling project grant funded by the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Prepared by NAPCOR, with cooperation and
support from the The Association
of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers (APR), the report identifies seven venue
and event categories based on shared characteristics, and estimates the potential
volume of recyclable containers generated within each of these categories, and
cumulatively.
For readers looking for a general overview on venue/event recycling,
the report provides six guiding principles shared by all successful recycling
models, as well as common on-site recycling opportunities. For those more closely
involved with developing and implementing recycling programs at venues or events
– whether recycling coordinators, event/venue management, environmental
groups, trade associations, and other public recycling officials – the
report provides programmatic detail in the form of successful recycling “models”
for each of the seven identified venue and event categories. For each category model, the report describes two active program examples.
There are some truly comprehensive and sustainable venue and event material
recovery programs in place through which, in addition to beverage containers,
paper, cardboard, food waste, cooking oils and more are recycled, composted,
or reused in some way. We hope this report inspires additional discussion, commitment,
and efforts along these lines.
